The small peninsula of Piona or Olgiasca, located on the north Lecco bank of Lake Como, extends into the lake like a crooked finger and creates an inlet, known as Laghetto di Piona. The peninsula is famous for the rich mineralogy of its pegmatite dykes and the Piona Priory or Piona Abbey, located at its top.
On this peninsula crop out three of the big 10 dykes of the Piona pegmatite swarm, which is embedded into the high-grade metapelites (sillimanite-, garnet-bearing gneiss) of the Dervio-Olgiasca Zone (DOZ). The DOZ, which belongs to the crystalline basement of the Central Southern Alps, represents a segment of upper to middle continental crust, originated after Variscan intermediate pressure amphibolite facies metamorphism and exhumated during the Alpine orogenesis (di Paola & Spalla, 2000). The Piona pegmatite swarm consists of more than 30 dykes, 10 of which are more than 5 m thick and 10 m long and include the Malpensata, Laghetto, and Rivetta dykes on the peninsula of Piona; Alpe Sommafiume and Luna dykes; and Alpe Sparesè pegmatite bodies on the northern flank of Monte Legnoncino. The granitic nature of melt is established by the primary mineralogical composition of the dykes: quartz, feldspar, and muscovite.
Malpensata, Laghetto, and Rivetta dykes were exploited for ceramic feldspar in the first half of the 1900s. Jervis (1873), who first understood the potential interest of the Piona feldspar as ceramic raw material, described also garnet and tourmaline as associated minerals.
