Mina San Manuel o las Cobatillas

San Manuel or Cobatillas adit were mined since mid XIX century (1863). Due to the high percent of iron close to 70%, the iron ore were also worked to supply the smelting furnaces (blasting and reverbetory furnaces) of famous business man Manuel Agustin Heredia, during mid XIX century, settled in the Rio Verde (Marbella).

Iron mineralization (basically pure granular magnetite with minor pyrite) is related to a thrust fault contact between Mg-marble/serpentinites and alpine lherzolites, where marbles are granuloblastic and high Mg dolomitic composition. The iron ores occur mainly banded or as irregular stockworks of magnetite pods, hosted in non-pure dolomitic-silicate marbles. Marbles are highly weathered and hydrothermalized which containing yellowish serpentine veins (antigorite, lizardite).

Magnetite assemblage also includes serpentine type lizardite, forsterite, pyrite, hydromagnesite, dolomite, calcite and antigorite.

Some blackish octahedral magnetite crystals up to 8mm on dolomite matrix have been found which can be considered of interest to collectors.
