Hamilton Jenkin makes particular reference to reports of the 'hot lode' intersected in Wheal Clifford where water at a temperature of around 100 deg Fahrenheit continually poured over the miners. Citing various reports the conditions were said to be extreme greatly reducing productivity and raising costs as miners could barely work for 1 hour in a day. On the 280 fathom level west of Garland's Shaft the water as recorded at 128 degrees F. (Mines and Miners of Cornwall, pt VI Around Gwennap, 1963, Truro Bookshop, Truro)
The tips occupy an extensive area on the slope above the road. Whilst partly overgrown with trees, several large heaps are still accessible. Towards the upper end of the site is a shaft collar that has recently been enclosed with a chain link fence. From this a column of vapour rose up into the absolutely still air on the January morning when I visited. Not surprising given the reports of the heat within the workings. Jan, 2023.
