A former lode Au-Pb mine located in the WΒ½ sec. 20, T4N, R14E, MDM, about 3.35 km S of Sheep Ranch, along the N side of Indian Creek (2Β½ miles N of Murphys). Operated during the 1890's, 1905, 1939 to 1940, and from 1954 to at least 1962. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in schist, slate, diorite and quartz diorite. The ore body strikes N55W and dips 65NE at a thickness of 0.61 meter. Controls for ore emplacement included a porphyry dike. The country rock is a dark, siliceous slate. A series of narrow quartz veins occur in mica schist and graphitic schist. A number of dikes of fine-grained diorite and quartz diorite are present. The veins are intensely faulted and sheared. The gold is usually associated in galena. Local rocks include Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada).
Workings include underground openings with an overall depth of 42.67 meters and comprised of 3 adits (upper, middle and lower) at 175, 280 and 520 feet long, respectively. There is a N crosscut adit with 2 branches 500 feet from the portal. 300 feet into the NW branch is a 140 foot vertical winze. A cut was being driven N at the time of Clark's account (1962). At the time of Clark's report the mine had been active since 1954 and the operators were working a small, rich ore body.
Production data are found in: Clark, Wm. B. & P.A. Lydon (1962).
No other production figures were found.
