Orthopyroxene granite (charnockite), or more specifically described in the source as charnockitic gneissic grandiorite, near Mount Malcolm in the southern part of the Fraser Range. The quarry is about 2 kilometres south of the Southern Hills pastoral station homestead.
It is hard gneissic grandiorite, coarse grained, greenish grey, to deep olive colour when polished. Discovered by Maritana Gold NL in 1988, who subsequently changed their name to Fraser Range Granite NL, then developed the quarry for dimension stone. Ownership changed to Allied Granites Pty Ltd, then the Dimension Stone Group Australia Pty Ltd.
It is a large deep quarry, with substantial resources of stone over a 200 metre wide, west north-west trending zone, estimated at 16 000 tonnes.
Several examples can be found in Sydney of the stone including the Governor Phillip Tower, Government House Museum, and as paving slabs at the Olympic Park venues.
