An old copper mine, which was at work during the 18th century and was eventually amalgamated with parts of Wheal Fortune, another old mine south of it, under the name Harrowbarrow Mine. After the Calstock Tin and Copper Mines had been dissolved, Wheal George appears to have been worked independently for a short period of time, as a record for some black tin raised in 1854 indicates. There are subsequent records for Harrowbarrow mine continuing until 1873, but all later records are only for workings in the southern part of the sett, suggesting that Wheal George was abandoned before 1874.
Workings in this section were chiefly on an EW-trending lode, called Wheal George Lode, which was intersected by two NS-trending crosscourses. The lode was extensively developed from five shafts that were all sunk to deep adit level, but stoping was mainly carried out on shallow levels, suggesting that the lode became poor at depth. A crosscut on deep adit level connects to a shaft known as Old Footway Sump, which was sunk on the eastern crosscourse to a depth of 85 fms below surface (60 fms below deep adit). There are no records of the ore raised here, but it was presumably lead ore, possibly argentiferous.
The only record of output under the name Wheal George is for 1.5 tons of black tin raised in 1854.
