An iron mine opened in 1931 by Republic Steel Corp. and shipping 13.7 million tons through 1978. Initial workings were entered from the shaft of the neighboring Virgil Mine, but when Inland Steel Co. assumed ownership in 1943, a separate shaft was sunk, with at least six major levels to 1625 feet depth. The Sherwood Mine is notable for uranium mineralization.

The property description is SE-NE and NE-SE Sec. 23 T43N-R35W, which is the 80 acres between N46ΒΊ6'19", N46ΒΊ6'45", W88ΒΊ38'15", and W88ΒΊ38'34". During the 1950s, the operation was expanded to include the entire SW quarter.
