Containes exposures of Sylvania Sandstone, of lower middle Devonian age, which contains vugs of calcite and celestine. Sulfur and other minerals may occur in carbonate layers contained in the sandstone or at the base of the sandstone formation.
The iron-bearing and heavy minerals occur as authigenic grains in the sandstone, with limonite being of supergene origin. The washed sand is especially pure, over 99% silica, and so is a premium source of sand for the glass industry.
