A former Mn-Fe-Al-silica occurrence/mine located in the SE¼SE¼NW¼ of sec. 16, T18N, R3E, SBM, 1.9 km (1.2 miles) NW of Owl Hole Springs (coordinates of record), in the SW part of the Owlshead Mountains, on National Park Service land (Death Valley National Park) (located claim when land was state owned). Discovered in 1914. First produced in 1915. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10 meters.

NOTE: USGS MRDS database file #10140377 presents MRDS files #10109408 & 10188841 as related files. MRDS file #10036243 presents MRDS file #10164444 as a related file. None of these 3 MRDS files have any apparent relationship with this locality although one of them shares a similar name.

The ore body strikes N40W and dips 85S at a thickness of 10 meters, depth-to-top of 3 meters, width of 12 meters, and a length of 40 meters. Ore body No. 1 is a breccia fill and irregular. Ore body No. 2 is a shear zone. The primary mode of origin was hydrothermal activity. The secondary mode of origin was contact metasomatism. Primary ore control was igneous activity and the secondary control was fracturing. Wallrock alteration was slight (bleaching). Local rocks include pre-Cenozoic granitic and metamorphic rocks undivided.

Workings include unspecified surface and underground openings (the topo map reflects 1 shaft and 1 adit symbol at this location.

USGS MRDS database file #10036243 presents some discrepant data and places this locality (or a nearby, related locality), in sec. 18 at 35.64888, -116.69809. These are data probably related to the Owls Spring prospect (https://mrdata.usgs.gov/mrds/show-mrds.php?dep_id=10095186).

Data presented:

Mineralization is hosted in Pliocene alluvium. Manganese veins cut a Tertiary (?) fanglomerate. Vein material is hematitte, black manganese oxides and boulders derived from the conglomerate walls. The ore zone in the E workings are up to 30 feet wide, with granite boulders in a matrix of hematite and manganese oxides. The main wsorkings are 2 parallel veins of black oxide ore. The main N vein strikes N30 to 45W and the S vein strikes N50W. Local rocks include Plio-Pleistocene and Pliocene loosely consolidated deposits.

Workings data are not presented (the topo map does not reflect any mining symbols in this section).

Analytical data results: Average grade 17% Mn.
