For reasons that are not clear, pinkish-white crystalline quartz from this locality has been referred to for decades as "siliceous sinter". Sinter typically refers to massive silica deposited by hot springs, which does not describe the well-crystallized material from McKay Head; "sinter" from this locality appears merely to be quartz with an outer zone rendered milky by abundant fluid and other inclusions.
