The socallled "Kabamba Jasper" or "Crocodile Jasper" is, according to Madagascar Minerals's homepage [http://www.madagascarminerals.com/cat_crocodile_jasper1.cfm] found in an area quarried by Norcross. The exact locality area is not known, but belived to be in the Ambohiby and/or Bevato intrusive igneous batolites about 15-20 km east of the town Tsiroanomandidy. Veins of rhyolite are described as a rarity within these batolites.
The "Kabamba Jasper" is not jasper nor stromatolites (as it is sold as), but in fact a volcanic rhyolite rock. The EPI-Institute in Germany has studied the rock by thin section and XRD. The greenish colored rock consist of the minerals quartz, pyroxene (aegirine), albite, and K feldspar. The characteristic, blackish, rounded aggregates consist of needles of amphiboles (riebeckite to paragasite in composition).
