Hermitage is 38 kilometres north of Tennant Creek, and 4 kilometres west of the Stuart Highway. It is one kilometre north of the Northern Star Gold Mine, access along bush tracks from the haul road to this mine.
The site shows outcropping hematite/quartz ironstone, silicified hematite rich siltstone, and jasper, hosted by siltstone, and fine grained sandstone. It is part of the east-west Northern Star-Marathon-Whippet structure, and in a northern extension of the north-east trending Northern Star structure.
The area shows as Aeolian covered sand flats, with three minor hematite-quartz outcrops, in hematite rich sedimentary rocks, with minor jasper. The most north-east of the outcrops shows shallow historic pits to a depth of one metre, but there is no recorded production.
Discovered in 1937 from an AGGSNA magnetic survey. Rock chip sampling was undertaken by Geopeko in 1988, but most came in as under 0.1 g/t Au, with the exception of 3 samples showing high gold grades. Drilled by Northern Star Territory Gold Mines, then Geopeko who drilled 14 holes, with variable results. The best was 9 metres @ 21 g/t Au, 3% Cu, and 2.4% Bi. 'Good' arsenic, uranium and tungsten values were found in one hole tested for these elements.
Pacific Mining Corporation Limited on behalf of Normandy explored the site between 1991 to 1997 via a remarkable 749 drill holes, finding only low Au values. It states the bedrock is very weathered siltstone, fresh material below this purple, red-brown to brown, with some fine grained greywacke. Areas of chlorite-hematite-jasperoidal ironstone show anomalous gold and copper, with lesser bismuth. With the amount of drill holes there should be more geology information, but the source spends most of its time explaining why certain types of drilling took place.
