The Lone Hand gold mine is located in the far south-west of the Boogardie Goldfield. It was one of the first mines on the field, and the first to find water at depth via a shaft 120 feet deep. The mine was developed by Lourie, Warren and Watson (surnames). Initially 1000 pounds of gold was dollied when sinking the water shaft. An Otis crusher was erected at the mine. By 1896 the mine had yielded 1400 oz.
They attempted to float the mine as a company in London, but their timing was off. It was offered just as the gold boom bust. Failing to float the company, the lease was abandoned.
Described as a mullocky leader (kaolin), 5 feet wide, dipping vertically, with small ferruginous quartz leaders, often jaspery at 3 oz/t, at times with coarse gold. The mine contained a rich alluvial patch which attracted prospectors. It was taken up then abandoned several times between 1893 to 1907.
By 1897 it was being called the 'old' Lone Hand Mine. It was taken up again in this year by a local syndicate, renaming the mine the Constellation. A visitor at the time notes the Otis crusher slowly rusting away. It was worked intermittently for a couple of years before being abandoned again.
Local prospectors in 1900, approached the Minister of Mines to erect a battery at the abandoned mine to access the water in the shaft. The minister told them it would be looked into, and no more came of it.
The site is now marked by an abandoned open pit, developed over the historic workings in the 1980's and 1990's. Present lease holder Ramelius Resources estimates the deposit still holds 258 tonnes at 1.8 Au g/t yielding 15 000 ounces.
Ramelius Resources call the pit Lone Pine.
