Calton Hill is a small rounded hill just over 100 m across and rising c. 60 m above a limestone plateau, marking a volcanic complex including tuffs, deeply weathered amygdaloidal lavas and a basanite sill emplaced within limestone (Tomkeieff 1928). The basanite that was formerly quarried, invades the lava and tuffs and is rich in mantle nodules.
