Abandoned gold mine.

Auriferous quartz reef, vertical to steeply north dipping, trending east-west, with well defined schist walls. There are two quartz reefs within the lode, about one foot wide each, named Maori and Maud. The quartz has a comb structure, with small well formed quartz crystals, some showing trapezohedral faces. Large quantities of specimen gold was found within the reef when first mined.

Mining started around 1880, re-opened 1891, and was last worked in 1908-1910 as the Cox's Reef Quartz Mining Company Limited. The mine was developed by Joseph Cox and Edward Clifford. Cox operated a store in Waipori with his brother, William Henry Cox, was postmaster, and worked, or had shares in several mines across the Waipori goldfield since the early 1870's.

Cox and Clifford mined the site from 1880 to 1885, as the Little Maud Gold Mining and Quartz Crushing Company. John Gare is mine manager. A small battery was erected, with the Alves amalgamator and concentrator, a unique invention they had employed to save gold that would normally have gone to the tailings.

The site is just west of the southern most windmill at the Mahinerangi Wind Farm, bordering the upper reaches of Battery Creek. The site is reached by the Eldorado Track off Mahinerangi Road.

In 1872, Cox paid for an advert in a local newspaper, protesting the gold export tax, calling for a Boston Tea Party type protest, and violent revolution to bring down the government.
