A giant beach sands operation owned to 80% by Rio Tinto and 20% the Malagasy Government. Situated at the south-eastern "end" of Madagascar, the ilmenite deposit continues for dozens of kilometers along the beach. Once full production is reached, the mine will produce some 750,000 t of ilmenite anually. Zircon is one of the by-products, monazite is rejected due to its high thorium content.
