Anthophyllite asbestos mine and quarry some 25 km WNW of Outokumpu.
Worked during the period 1918-1975. Annual output in the 1950s and 1960s was about 10,000 tons.

The major rock types at Paakkila are mica gneiss and granite. The asbestos deposits are associated with serpentinite intrusives of the Karelian orogeny. The asbestos lenses display a zonal structure, which is manifested by the variation in mineralogical composition from the contacts of the lenses with the host rock towards the center. The zones are: gneiss, mica, tremolite/actinolite, talc, anthophyllite asbestos, with an serpentine asbestos core.
