A copper and tin mine on the cliff edge northwest of Treveal, working more than 30 lodes from shallow shafts not more than 15 fms deep. There also are ancient workings in the area, some of them very primitive, but little is known of their history.
Treveal Mine was started some time after 1804, when bounds in "Treveale-Clift", Zennor, came up for sale by auction at Penzance. One of the most productive lodes was called the "Great Copper Lode", which lay immediately at the granite-killas contact. At about 5 fms from surface, it carried large lumps of ore grading at 25% of copper. South of it were more than 20 tin-bearing lodes, many of which had been productive when worked at a shallow level.
According to an article published in the Mining Journal on 2 July 1836, the sett was a narrow stretch of land along the coast, about 700 fms in length from west to east, where it was adjoined by Trevega Bal. In 1826, a deep adit was opened just above high water mark in River Cove, about the center of the sett, and driven southeast in order to discover all lodes contained in the sett and to mine them more effectively. At a distance of 160 fms from its entrance, it intersected with Great Copper Lode, and until 1836, it had been driven close to the granite-killas contact. It was planned to continue further south, where it would cross no less than 28 tin lodes, which then would be explored by driving east and west. Though, this work was never carried out and the mine was abandoned soon after. Except for 10 tons of copper ore that were sold in 1823, there are no records of output, suggesting that the lodes became uneconomic at depth.
