There are two distinct copper mines that were together owned by Great Boulder Holdings. The mines include the Great Boulder mine proper which is a series of pits and shafts over a strike of 600 metres and the Welcome mine, which occurs at the top of a ridge 1km to the west-north-west. They are located 5km east of Arkaroola Village with the Welcome mine occurring next to the Arkaroola-Paralana road.

The Great Boulder mine has two sections. The eastern section is on top of a ridge and the lode has been worked via vertical shafts and and a series of open cuts. The host rocks are siliceous shales and quartz veins with mineralisation within the joint fractures. The western section is at the bottom of the hill near the Tillite Gorge track and is a limonitic shale with copper mineralisation again in joint fractures. The main minerals found are copper carbonates and were noted by H.Y.L.Brown - 1908 as high grade, with the best ore found near the No1 shaft.

The Welcome mine has two large costeans opening up the lode, the longer one being 70 metres. The ore was found inside a brown flaggy siliceous shale and occurred as crystalline sprays and crack fillings of malachite.
