Minerals and MuseumsMaine Mineral and Gem Museum opening

27th Nov 2019 18:39 UTCTom Klinepeter

The long awaited, much anticipated Maine Mineral and Gem Museum is opening on Thursday 12/12/2019.  Located in the beautiful Bethel, Maine USA  it is the premier science museum in Maine. As a volunteer I have had the pleasure of touring the new museum and I can tell you it is well worth the  wait. So if you are in the northeast US or are planning a visit add this to the list of musts.
For more information check the museums Facebook page or website

Wonderful news!
If I get the chance, this will be on my to-do list......

Tom-  Looking forward to visiting the museum.  Hope to get there in the next year or two.

I, too, have been waiting for this often-postponed event and look forward to being wowed by a bunch of neat local rocks.

Bethel is right near the Sunday River ski resort, so in case it's necessary to bribe or cajole a non-mineral person into making a trip up to Maine so you can check out the museum . . . .

Also close to a group of areas to collect minerals

Good to see a mineral museum actually opening rather than closing.

Hope they put in a state of the art security system with continuous monitoring.
Looking forward to a Mindat report Tom.

Here's a link (I hope it works) to a long writeup in yesterday's Portland Press-Herald:  http://www.pressherald.com/2019/11/29/gems-minerals-and-worlds-largest-moon-rocks-get-their-own-museum-in-bethel/

Too much emphasis on meteorites in my opinion, but if that's what it takes to draw people to see the real attraction, Maine minerals, so be it.  Looking forward to seeing the place myself.

Hi everyone!  I hope you all are able to come and visit.  We are can'tfindawordforit excited to open the doors and show you what we've been up to.  I am on staff at the Museum and can't believe the journey it has been.
